Tykewriter Digest: December 2022
Catch up with last month's stories and articles published on Mark Cantrell's author blog
THIS is almost – but not quite – an author newsletter, so excuse the indulgence of including it as a regular part of the outHouse package.
For the last four years or so, I've managed to sustain a weekly update cycle on my official author website by borrowing – kind of – a trick from the trade.
It means I get to present a nice range of material that both informs and entertains; maybe occasionally even makes the reader think. With topics covering science, technology, culture, literary life, arts, and so much more, there's plenty to keep you going.
Best of all, it makes sure the site isn't all about my work and me me me (even though, technically, it is).
Anyway, that's the standard preliminary prelude out of the way: over to the stories that appeared on Mark Cantrell, Author during November 2022.
Have a read, maybe explore the site and its links, check out my books; you might find something that takes your fancy...

Textiles spin a yarn for the digital revolution
Scientists create smart display ‘screen’ out of flexible woven fabric
18 November 2022 | Technology
SCIENTISTS have come up with a way to make flexible display screens with integrated sensors, memory and energy harvesting out of ordinary woven fabric.
The trick is in the weave, as it were; or rather in the integration of flexible fibre-based electronics into the conventional yarns used to make the fabric. Cloth displays can then be manufactured using textile-based industrial processes.

Woodland life is weird, wonderful and sometimes downright disgusting
But many species face an uncertain existence, thanks to us
11 November 2022 | Nature
IF you go down in the woods today, you might find all manner of weird and wonderful lifeforms, but you’d better hurry if you want to see ’em while they last.
Worryingly, much woodland wildlife is in decline and may even become lost forever. This is no act of nature, however, simply humanity’s poor regard for its fellow Earthlings (not to mention the preservation of our own ecological niche).

Meet Salix Homes’ very own artist in residence
Salford social housing tenant is a highrise master of canvas imagination
4 November 2022 | Art
ARTISTS come from all walks of life and can be found in the unlikeliest of places; actually, if you stop to think about it, they’re not unlikely at all.
Given the stigma so-often attached to residents who live in the tenure, social tenants are doubtless one of those groups where artistic endeavour raises an eyebrow: that’s unexpected.
